The 2020 Bent Wheel Bash in Abilene, Texas on February 29-March 1 for the 2nd race in the TMBRA spring championship series exceeded expectations. The weather in Abiline this year was great for the entire event and temperatures reached into the high 70s during the later races. The course conditions were loose the first 4 miles and particularly the start and finish areas. Although fast and flowy the course claimed lots of victims this year. Just an inch off the singletrack could leave racers, tires and spectators full of cactus spines. Flat tires and crashes were plentiful causing several DNFs across the teams. Dumping loose gravel and lava rock in the finish straight could be improved upon in the future. Fortunately the Dripping Springs Tigers Mountain Bike Team managed several podium spot and top 10 finishes which included students, alumni, parents and coaches.
Bent Wheel Bash is a benefit race, so not only do you get to ride a fun course and experience a bit of West Texas, you also help support the Abilene Police Department. Their training academy is adjacent to Buck Creek Trails, and they open up their training grounds for us to use as the start, finish, and expo area for our race. The police also serve as many of our volunteer staff during race weekend.
Thanks to the Toasted Traveler food truck for serving up yummy food for the racers, spectators and volunteers.
